Bunce and Tasso Islands
Experience a fascinating guided tour of Bunce Island’s historical slave trading post.
Situated in the Freetown harbor, Bunce Island was an ideal meeting place for European slave traders arriving on large sailing ships with human captives. From Bunce Island, thousands of captured African men, women and children were embarked on the long and arduous voyage to a life of slavery, particularly on the plantations of South Carolina and Georgia where their rice-growing skills were much in demand.
Bunce Island was the largest British slave castle on the Rice Coast of West Africa. While you are there, take a look around the old fort wall, the slave quarters, the ruined fort, the ancillary buildings, the grave sites and check for the remains of the canons.
Next, continue to the nearby island to explore Tasso Island, one of the unique touristic destinations the continent has to offer. With its touching colonial history, outdoor dynamic activities, and stunning view of the ocean and tropical forests, Tasso Island has gained the interest of a myriad of travelers, historians and preservationists.
