Bunce Island
Experience a fascinating guided tour of Bunce Island’s historical slave trading post.
Situated in the Freetown harbor, Bunce Island was an ideal meeting place for European slave traders arriving on large sailing ships with human captives. From Bunce Island, thousands of captured African men, women and children embarked on the long and arduous voyage to a life of slavery particularly on the plantations of South Carolina and Georgia, where their rice-growing skills were much in demand. Bunce Island was the largest British slave castle on the Rice Coast of West Africa.
While you are there, take a look around the old fort wall, the slave quarters, the ruined fort, the ancillary buildings, the grave sites and check for the remains of the canons.
