Freetown was founded in 1787 for the resettlement of freed slaves after Granville Sharpe, an Englishman with a deep concern for the freed slaves’ welfare, published a proposal to take them to Africa and settle them where they could prosper in an ideal climate and environment.
You will proceed on a sightseeing tour of the city of Freetown to explore the historic sites around the city and its surroundings.
National Museum: A tour of Sierra Leone’s history and culture that includes a display of our various ethnic artefacts.
Cotton Tree: The proud landmark that holds great significance to the freed slaves that settled in the country.
Maroon Church: The oldest church in Freetown built by former Jamaican Slaves in 1808.
Martello Tower (1805): A replica of the towers as in south of England during the Napoleonic eras.
Old King’s Yard: A temporary quarantine for freed slaves before they were released into Freetown.
Old Wharf Steps: Also referred to as the Freedom Steps where liberated slaves first set foot on Sierra Leone’s soil.
Old Fourah Bay College (1845): The first university in Sub – Saharan Africa that was the citadel of learning that won Sierra Leone the reputation “The Athens of Africa”.
Railway Museum (1896): Displays an array of trains that were commuting the 277 miles railway from Freetown to Pendembu.
Big Market: Arts and crafts market, masks, batiks, beaded necklaces etc. This market is a treasure trove for souvenir buyers.
