Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Creole Villages & River N˚2
A trip to Sierra Leone would be incomplete without a visit to the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, home to more than 100 orphaned and rescued chimpanzees. The Sanctuary is located in an area of 100 acres of rainforest within the Western Area Reserve about a 30 minutes drive from Freetown. The Sanctuary was set up in 1995 and is committed to the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned and abandoned Chimpanzees. A tour leads visitors through the journey of rescued chimps, from their arrival in the nursery, which offers the best viewing opportunities, to their release in the larger reserves.
Our next stop is the famous Charlotte Falls/Village named after Princess Charlotte of Wales. It is a mountainous village located in the Rural District in the Western Area about 20 miles outside of Freetown. Charlotte, is commonly known as Charlotte Village, and is within close proximity to the towns of Regent, and Leicester. Neighboring Charlotte Village is also Bathurst which was originally called Leopold in honor of Leopold I of Belgium, who was at the time the husband of Princess Charlotte.
The people of Charlotte & Bathurst Villages are almost entirely from the Creole ethnic group and are mostly Christians. Charlotte & Bathurst were founded in 1817 to provide accommodation for receptive, liberated enslaved Africans, who had been brought to Freetown by the British Royal Navy West Africa Squadron.
Our last stop is River No 2 which is located in the Western Peninsula region of Sierra Leone. It is one of Sierra Leone’s finest white sand beaches backed by luscious tree-covered mountains that slope down to the sea. You can play around in the shallow current of the river before it meets the sea, sunbathe, take a guided walk in the forest, go on a boat trip, buy some arts and crafts, or chat with the friendly locals.
