Tiwai Island
The tropical rainforest in Tiwai Island is undoubtedly one of Sierra Leone’s wildlife highlights. Encircled by the lazily flowing water of the Moa River, you are immersed in the sights and sounds of one of the world’s densest and most diverse chimpanzees and monkeys. Webs of trails weave through the Tiwai forest allowing visitors and researchers to explore up to 50 km of walking paths. If you move silently through the forest, you can glimpse some of the rarest and most colorful primates in the world, such as the Diana and Colobus monkeys.
Day 1
Drive from Freetown to Kambama. On arrival in Kambama, we will discover its traditional habitat, customs and everyday life before boarding a motorized pirogue to reach Tiwai Island where you will check in at the camp and have lunch.
In the early evening, after dinner, we will depart for a guided night hike around the campsite to soak up the fauna and flora of this universe of tropical rain forests, and with a bit of luck you can meet on the banks of the river the rare dwarf hippopotamus, a lonely and nocturnal animal that is hard to see.

Day 2
In the morning, walk the forests of Tiwai Island accompanied by a local guide, experiencing the thrill of tracking the 11 different species of primates, 135 species of birds and some 800 species of butterfly, as well as the footprints of mammals such as mongoose, wild pigs and that Pygmy Hippo and not to mention the incredible plant life.
Return to camp for lunch and a free time to relax before your boat ride on the Moa River in a canoe boat. Take in spectacular views of Tiwai Island and the neighboring mainland, looking out for monkeys jumping between the trees, some 135 species of birds and, of course, the occasional crocodile and the very elusive Pygmy Hippo.
